Ostrich Fern Matteuccia struthiopteris

Large, clump-forming fern. Very showy with giant, feathery plumes growing in bright green whorls. Native to the northeast.

Clusters of fertile fronds arise in late summer.

Royal Fern Osmunda regalis

Sun to Partial Shade

Leaflets turn from red to green as they mature. Forms huge, light green rosettes. Late to emerge in spring.

In fall, erect, fertile fronds form in the centre of the plant and project above the outer spreading, sterile fronds.

Cinnamon Fern Osmunda cinnamomea

Arching fronds are bluish green and sterile. May be evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on winter temperature.

In the summer, fertile fronds appear in the center of the plant. They are cinnamon-colored and edible.

Japanese Painted Fern Athyrium niponicum var. pictum

Fronds are a soft shade of metallic silver-gray with hints of red and blue. The center stem is red.
