Creative Little Garden Newsletter #1 April 19, 2006

Welcome to the Creative Little Garden newsletter list.  When you joined as a member, you gave us your email address, so we have subscribed you to our occasional newsletter.  We haven't quite finished setting up everyone's preferences.  But after we do finish inputting the areas of interest you checked off on your membership form, we promise to send you a very brief newsletter #2 giving you a link to your own personal preferences page.  On that page, you'll be able to change our interests selections.

Our website

This newsletter is part of a wider effort to build a Creative Little Garden website.  We hope you'll find it interesting.  A few things you'll find:

Busy Earth Day 2006 -- Saturday, April 22

What is it about Earth Day that attracts so many garden-related events?  There's a lot of competition for our Spring Planting day.

Spring Planting Day -- 11am

We'll have a lot of flowers to plant.  We'll clean the chairs and organize things.  We might even repair the low wall that separates the willow tree from the patio.  If you'd rather clean up than get dirty, join us in the early afternoon.

Torrential rain date: April 23, Sunday.  (Actually, it looks like there will probably be occasional showers all weekend, so we'll be planting on Saturday if the weather isn't the sort that only a duck could enjoy.)

"Chef in the Garden" Benefit for Miracle Garden -- All Day

This is really a neighborhood-wide garden event, sponsored by Whole Foods and the Council on the Environment of NYC (the main organization that supports the Creative Little Garden).  It is a benefit for the Miracle Garden, one of our sister gardens.  There will be events in Miracle Garden, and a tour of a number of other East Village gardens, including the Creative Little Garden.  Our visitors will be making a potpourri sachet in our garden.

Festivities begin in the Miracle Garden around 10am, and go all day.  So head on over to East 3rd St between Ave A and B.  We hear that visitors will arrive in our garden around 11am, and that the main event in Miracle Garden is between 2pm and 3pm.

Community Gardeners Forum -- 11am-1:30pm

The NYC Community Garden Coalition will be sponsoring a panel discussion and open forum on the status of NYC community gardens.  Come and help decide the next steps gardeners should take to meet our biggest challenges.  Featuring invited speakers from the New York State Attorney General's Office, GreenThumb, NYC Park's Dept, elected officials and more.

Location: Manhattan's CUNY Graduate Center, Elebash Recital Hall, 365 Fifth Avenue (between 34th & 35th), ground floor.

For more information: call 212.402.1121 x7 or email nyccgcinfo@yahoo.com

After the forum, stop by the Creative Little Garden to fill us in, and to help with the cleanup ;-)

And the Next Weekend -- Saturday, April 29

The Creative Little Garden is being honored with inclusion in a tour for the National Gardening Association.  This event will be part of the NYC GROWS Garden Festival in Union Square Park. This daylong public celebration of gardening is the highlight event of NYC GROWS and the National Gardening Association’s National Garden Month 2006.  The festival is the end of a week-long series of public events.

Architectural and Landscaping Plans for the Garden

Entrance Handrails

We will be installing handrails at the entrance.  The steps we built when we renovated the entrance two years ago were an improvement, making it safer to enter the garden, but they do present an obstacle for our neighbors who have difficulty negotiating steps.  The handrails will be ADA compliant, and will be cast iron so that they are integrated with the fence and gate.

Wanted: White Birch Tree

Sadly, the small tree in the center of the path died last year.  We have dreams of a white clump birch tree as a new centerpiece for the garden path, hopefully a large one with three trunks.  If you have any leads, or are interested in contributing, please contact us.

Creative Little Garden Events Later This Spring

Members Party -- Saturday, June 10

Save the date for this one.  We'll send more details as plans unfold.  It will be sometime in the evening.

By the way, June 10 will be the brightest Saturday night of the summer.  It's the night before the full moon and the moon will rise a half-hour before the sun sets.

Rain date: June 11, Sunday.

"Adventures in the Arts" Greenthumb Workshop

On Tuesday, June 6, from 5:30 - 7pm, the Creative Little Garden will host this city-wide workshop for community gardeners being planned by GreenThumb.  Participants will be assisted in planning Art events for their gardens.  The Creative Little Garden is excited to host this event, especially since GreenThumb explicitly requested our space because of our sculptures.

"Adventures in the Arts seeks to link gardens and artist together, moving our gardens to the center stage of community development. Come out to the Adventures in the Arts workshop to learn more, and sign up for Pathmark vouchers to purchase food for your events. Maybe you want to learn how your garden can be a haven for the emerging artists in your communities. Or perhaps you or someone you know is an artist seeking exposure. We believe that a lot more can be done for the artists within a city bursting at the seams with creativity."
